Over to you James:

Coming up with a unique idea in today’s market place is really difficult. Yet every now and again a new product arrives and you think ‘How didn’t I think of this?’ The truth is you could make a good living and build a potentially profitable business by providing a service that everyone else is doing or you could build an empire by;

Individual

There is no one else like you on the planet. Yes millions of others will have the same view point as you, but only you can put your spin on it. If you’re brash and a bit wacky then by all means be that person. Good or bad be unique.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in being yourself. Yeah if you are the loud one or even the quiet little one then you will turn some people off, but by being you, the relationship with the people who you will attract, will be genuine and unbreakable.

Passion

You need passion to succeed in anything. If you don’t believe in it then no one will. That passion needs to be overflowing at an incredible rate so that your readers or customers can see why they should believe in you and or buy your product straight away.

Passion can quite easily become an obsession, just be careful that the obsession doesn’t cloud your judgement.

Goal

If you don’t know where you are going, you can’t start your journey. I don’t just mean saying ‘My goal is to make a million this time next year’, it means sitting down with a pen and paper and map out what you want to achieve, how you are going to do it and more importantly why you are going to do it that way.

Brainstorming or mind mapping or simply just sat down with others over a coffee and a note pad and hammer it out.

Branding

Branding is important, for example look at Matthew, The Big Red Tomato Company, that is a memorable brand name. A name can potentially make or break you, but it doesn’t have to be a clever twist of an existing word it could quite easily be plain, simple and to the point.

I think ultimately what this all boils down to is be you. It’s you who has come up with the idea, you who has thought out its development and future so it’s you that will make it work!

What do you think?

Not having a goal but starting out is a sure way to not get there. :)

I think people these days are becoming more aware of the importance of goals, but we have to also put a plan in place how to achieve our goal. We have to be willing to make sacrifices too.

    Cheers.

Absolutely Gordie, when you don’t know where you’re heading on your journey it’s very difficult to get there.

Goals are like milestones maps, the vision is the destination.

    Cheers, Matthew

It was no accident that I turned “Dragonblogger” into my own brand, I wanted something that stood out. Rather than just use my name like so many of the Giant Bloggers do, which isn’t bad, but if you ever wanted to leave the business you can’t really sell your name if you built your empire out of your name, you can sell a “brand”.

All good advice, make sure you set “measurable goals” ones that you can track and see results, if you set goals that you can’t track or measure, it can be discouraging.

I was exactly the same with The Big Red Tomato Company, I think having a brand makes you more memorable too. Especially for newer blogs.

The key is to be unique.

There might be a hundred or even a thousand people in your niche but you are the only one who see it the way you do. You’re the only one who can explain it in the way you do.

This is a great reminder that we are all unique and there is room for each of us to have our own space in the blogosphere.

Speaking from your own voice is one of the most important things you can do as everyone’s life experiences and perceptions are different.

There are people out there who are desperate to hear what you have to say. So, go find them.

My approach is ready, fire, aim. For my current blog (my second) I was building myself as a brand. Who is Ralph Carlson. Hence the clever name RalphCarlsonBlog. Until I get a better idea, I’ll keep it.

Hi Ralph thanks for your comment. Some may say that it should be fire, fire, fire and forget the rest. Try some stuff if it works do some more if doesn’t do something different. For myself, the best investment I’ve ever made has been in myself, so fully endorse youre comment about yourself as a brand.

There are lots of important things to learn in this piece but for me, the most poignant is the need to brainstorm and write this stuff down. I don’t remember who said it but I’ve heard it said, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” (or words to that end. I might have just slaughtered that quote  )

    Matthew Needham Reply:

Absolutely right Eleanor, planning is the key! You’re also spot on with our old proverb about planning to fail.
