If someone looked at your shopping they could get a fair idea about who you are from what you’d bought. They’d make judgements about the places you shopped in, the products you bought and they’d have a fair idea as to what your values are and what is important to you.
The same is true in your business too. What you spend your time on reflects what is important to you and whether you’re going to be successful in achieving what you set out to do.
In this post, we’re going to look at why your diary is so important..
If you spend time doing unimportant things then you aren’t going to get big results. You’re going to be treading water and you’re not going to be getting anywhere fast.
Good enough is good enough
On unimportant tasks, you don’t need to spend a lot of time or make sure that they are perfect. Good enough is good enough. You need to focus on the high priority items which takes your business forward.
If you choose to do unimportant work, you need to get it done quickly, efficiently and right. Because the last thing you want is to have to do the job again. That’s even worse!
Are you spending time on the right things?
You can find the answer to this by starting with your objectives and looking at what you’re trying to achieve, then look at your task list, it should be immediately obvious which tasks take you forward towards your objectives and which tasks don’t.
The right things take you towards your goals and everything else doesn’t.
Similarly the people you’re having meetings with or spending time with will either take you towards your goals or make you tread water.
Are you tyring to avoid something by spending time on the trivial things? Ask yourself “am I spending time on the things (or with the right people) that matter or am I wasting time?”
Teams matter too
If you have a team it’s easy to distract them too by asking them to focus on trivial things when they should be focusing on the things that matter. Don’t distract them by sending an “email rant” demanding 5 things to be immediately, when these things could be done when people have time.
Focus on what matters.
Time is money.
