Thursday Thoughts: Including This is Broken

Last week Eduard Ezeanu commented that he could not believe that Wednesday had come round already.  I’m sorry to say, it’s back again. Welcome to Wednesday Wisdom. This is where we share useful resources we’ve discovered which will help inspire you grow your business.

If you’d like to read the articles from our previous Wednesday Wisdom posts you can do so by clicking the link.

So sit back, paper and pencil at the ready and let’s get going:

This week we have 7 articles/podcasts which could really make a difference to your business:

  1. Adrian Swinscoe had a great interview with Rachel Bridge , editor of the Enterprise section of The Sunday Times  and author of the book How to Make A Million Before Lunch. In the course of her work Rachel has interviewed many successful entrepreneurs and here she reveals the traits and ‘secrets’ of what makes them successful.
  2. In  The Trend for 2011- Inbound Marketing Frank Goley explains why SEO/PPC should be part of your  business plans and explains that traffic from search engines is pre-qualified customers and you need in to capitalise on it.
  3. Michael McKinney wrote a post 5 Leadership Lessons from Hank Moore, you can read the lessons if you like, but the key for me was at the end of the post. Where Moore suggests that you keep your own diary of lessons learned—both the reasons for your successes and for your failures.   Great idea – do you do this?
  4. Most businesses I come across tell me that their biggest challenge is sales. Mike Lopez tells us it’s all about relationships in Don’t Sell to Increase Sales also on the subject of sales, the shortest lesson in sales ever is revealed by Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, which can be summed up in 3 points: 1) ask questions 2) listen 3) repeat steps 1 and 2.
  5. If your inbox is like mine you probably get several emails a week from companies offering to undertake SEO for me. If you’re considering investing in SEO here are 5 things to remember while hiring a Internet marketer for your small business by Technshare.
  6. An article I forgot to include last week was from The  Rise to the Top following a very interesting interview I heard with Tim Ferriss was  7 Big Marketing Lessons from Tim Ferriss where David Siteman Garland distills the key lessons learned from Tim’s launch of the 4 Hour Work Week and his new book  the 4 Hour Body this has some really useful ideas to create a buzz around your product launch with literally very little money.
  7. I also listened to a really interesting podcast the other day from the BBC featuring an inspiring interview with the CEO of Ford – Alan Mulally I think this is one of the best interviews I’ve heard in a long time with some excellent leadership insights from the man credited with turning around Ford. Probably not for you if you have no interest in Leadership.

So, that’s what we’ve found this week. But, what about you? What has inspired you this week, please share your thoughts in the comments below:

It hasn’t really inspired me but I’ve been learning a lot about Groupon, and their business model. I’m beginning to understand the value of finding lifetime customers, who you can cultivate and feed content to over and over through a mailing list. Previously, I was so focused on creating a destination site but the value of 1 visitor to a destination site is not as valuable as 1 subscriber to your mailing list.

I think you’re right Henway, Groupon is a very interesting business model, especially when coupled with geo-location on smart phones.

    Hi Matthew:

I especially agree with your selection of The Trend for 2011- Inbound Marketing. I have made it a priority of mine for this year to become more SEO knowledgeable and implement those practices in my own blog. You have outlined some great reads here.

    All the best,
    Lisa

Hi Lisa, Thanks for stopping by. I’m a nupty when it comes to SEO. I mean I understand it kind of, but I don’t think I capitalise on it well enough. Only about 25% of the traffic coming here is from the almighty Google. Thanks for the comment, Matthew
